🤖 Inference cost is the gate on AI search — 10x too expensive today

Friedberg's back-of-envelope: a ChatGPT-style answer costs ~30 cents of compute against ~2.5 cents of cost on a traditional Google search that grosses ~5 cents of revenue — an order of magnitude gap that would run ~$80B a quarter at Google's query volume versus the $8-20B Google actually spends. Chat-native search therefore cannot economically displace keyword search until inference cost falls ~10x, which happens by riding the parallelized-silicon and cheap-energy curves over the next few years. The money in the AI search war accrues to the accelerated-compute and cloud supply chain that closes that gap, not to the search interface.

⚖ Why this verdict

fully deterministic — evaluate.py replays this from daily closes; nothing below is editable or hand-set

  1. Window: 2023-02-11 → 2025-02-11 — first mention + 24-month horizon, then the window locks.
  2. The call: ▲ LONG NVDA (primary play). NVDA rose 509.9% over the window → direction-adjusted R = +509.9% (the call made money).
  3. Benchmark: holding SPY over the same window returned +50.8%α = +509.9 − (+50.8) = +459.2% — what this call made or lost against just owning the index. This is the number the verdict uses.
  4. Rule fired:
    ▶ HIT — R ≥ +10% AND α ≥ +5 ✓ (R 509.9, α 459.2)
    · PARTIAL — R ≥ +5% OR α ≥ 0
    · MISS — everything else
  5. Credit: supporters of a HIT earn 1.0 each, opposers the inverse — this feeds the scoreboard weights. supported: Chamath, Friedberg, Jason | proxy-sensitive: MSFT→PARTIAL (+54.1%)
