NEW AMSC 🤖 LK-99 is a diamagnet, not a room-temperature superconductor closed 8 ▲ +54.5 -0.0 → 54.5

Chamath's directional call on the LK-99 claim two weeks into the global replication frenzy: the material is diamagnetic rather than superconducting, so it ends up as one more entry on the long list of near-miss materials rather than a room-temperature superconductor. Sacks concurs on the skeptical side ('wake me up when you know it's real') and Friedberg endorses the ~30% prediction-market handicap, noting one Chinese lab needed 8,000 samples to get zero resistance and only at -100C. The counter-case in the room is that five independent simulation labs produced confirmatory electron-pathway models, so the science-corner optimism is about the new search space this opens, not about LK-99 itself.

And I think we're going to find that, you know, it's like yet another material added to the list of materials, and it's okay.
Friedberg
Friedberg support ×1 sentiment ▶ 19:13
Yeah, I think it's probably that's probably a good handicap for where we are.
Sacks
Sacks support ×2 sentiment ▶ 24:46
Yeah, I mean, my attitude is kind of like, wake me up when you know it's real.

Jason oppose ×2 explicit_prediction ▶ 1:01:23
But the fact is, America is just crushing it in terms of employment, and that's why we didn't have this crash landing. I think the soft landing is because of employment, and I'll just end there.

Chamath
Chamath support ×3 explicit_prediction ▶ 54:54
Let me just state what I think about the downgrade. It's irrelevant. The S&P did it 13 years ago. Fitch is a marginal credit rating agency. They're at a minimum 13 years late.
DJT 🏛️ The Mar-a-Lago raid makes Trump nearly unbeatable for the 2024 nomination closed 38 CONTESTED ▲ +7.3 49.4 → 56.7
Sacks
Sacks support ×2 explicit_prediction ▶ 1:19:06
And part of the reason why I think Trump likely will be the nominee is because they are creating a backlash in the GOP where people basically think that he's being unfairly prosecuted and persecuted.
UUP 🌍 2023 marks the beginning of the end of dollar reserve dominance closed 9 CONTESTED ▼ -2.1 20.7 → 18.6
Friedberg
Friedberg support ×3 explicit_prediction ▶ 48:45
That means as we're trying to sell more Treasuries, foreign governments are buying fewer of them, which means that the US currency as a reserve is no longer the place that everyone wants to plow their money as much as it used to be. It is in decline.
Chamath
Chamath oppose ×3 explicit_prediction ▶ 54:54
Do you all of a sudden double down on the euro? Do you double down on the yuan, which is basically a proxy for doubling down on the US dollar? What are you supposed to do? And I never get a good answer because on a relative basis, the US will still continue to do well.
TLT 🏦 Phase three of the 2023 crisis is a US government debt crisis closed 87 ▲ +1.9 49.9 → 51.8
Friedberg
Friedberg support ×2 explicit_prediction ▶ 48:45
there were two prominent economists who shared that they think we're going to be facing long-term rates in the 5 to 7% range, very long-term rates for a very long period of time, that it is a new fiscal regime.
Sacks
Sacks support ×3 explicit_prediction ▶ 57:39
So if I can get my 5% to 7% from a risk-free US government bond, of course I'm going to do that. So the discount rate on equities will go up.
Chamath
Chamath oppose ×3 explicit_prediction ▶ 1:05:31
These 2 trillion of bonds that these guys will issue between the strip will trade from 5% all the way down to 3%. There'll be a line out the door, I guarantee you.

Episode digest

written during extraction and stored in data/extractions/ep140.json — the auditable source of truth, including everything market-adjacent that did not earn a capture

DIARIZATION DEFECT: only three labels exist and Chamath has none — he is present and MERGED INTO the `David Friedberg` label (same shape as E128), sharing it turn-by-turn until he leaves early ('Chamath had to bounce'); the receipts are Jason's 'Go ahead, Chamath' at 30:20 followed by a label-Friedberg turn claiming 'I wrote this in one of my annual letters', Sacks's 'Chamath, you brought up the Stanford president', Jason's 'That is what this chart shows' about a chart the speaker says he made, and the 15:50 University-of-Rochester/Ranga-Diaz IP story that is verbatim Chamath's own E120 anecdote — so every capture here was attributed from content, not labels (the two split points to spot-check are 15:50, Friedberg until 'So I'm a betting man' then Chamath, and 54:54, Friedberg for two sentences then Chamath from 'Let me just state what I think about the downgrade'). Three days after Fitch cut the US to AA+, Friedberg delivered a full debt-spiral manifesto — $1T of interest payments now exceeding defense, $2T of issuance in two quarters, foreign Treasury demand falling — and reinforced his own E110 dollar-reserve-erosion call at maximum strength: 'It is in decline.' Chamath took the other side hard, calling the downgrade 'irrelevant', debt-to-GDP 'a red herring', demanding the chicken littles name an alternative reserve currency, and guaranteeing 'a line out the door' for the next $2T of bonds at yields falling from 5% to 3% — a reinforce of his own debt-ceiling non-event thesis and a straight miss on the rates call, since yields kept climbing into October 2023. Sacks reinforced his own phase-three sovereign-debt-crisis idea through the crowding-out mechanism, and Jason declared the soft landing already won on employment, which lands as a direct oppose on Sacks's rate-hike-lag recession call in the final week of its window. On LK-99 the besties did make a directional call this time, unlike the E120 superconductor segment: Chamath predicted the material is diamagnetic and ends up 'yet another material added to the list' (he was right — retracted by November 2023), with Sacks skeptical and Friedberg endorsing the 30% prediction market; the only listed expression is AMSC, a loose proxy whose 12-month score can invert the verdict. The Trump indictment segment is otherwise pure politics, with one market-relevant line: Sacks reinforcing his own thesis that prosecution backlash locks in Trump's 2024 nomination.
