🤖 Independent frontier-model labs lose to hyperscaler capital

A frontier training run costs billions today and Chamath's read of Dario Amodei's number is roughly $100B by 2027, so only Google, Microsoft, Meta, Amazon and OpenAI can fund the next generation. New entrants like Ilya Sutskever's SSI cannot raise that, and VCs lack the temperament to bankroll a pure cost-and-compute arms race with no clear return. Sacks supplies a second mechanism for the same outcome: a safety-first lab is structurally slower and loses the race outright.

If more weighted voices pile on, it climbs; two mentions isn't conviction. direction semantics: bullish = the plays below are expected to RISE if the thesis is right → expression is long.

“Being the low cost producer is really going to matter in AI. Because at some level, the amount of tokens you produce is intelligence because of test time compute, you know, post-training reinforcement learning. And so if you can produce those tokens at a lower cost, you'll have a big advantage.”
