just crossed 5.2% for the first time in 20 years. ... $2 trillion deficit, $7 trillion a year of spending on $5 trillion a year of revenue. Both Elizabeth Warren and Donald Trump agreed ... buy a US government bond that pays me 10% pretax a year. Why the heck would I pay 50 times ... We are going to end up seeing more bubbles pop
by the time any of these SMRs actually get near production, the TCO of solar will be like $10 or $12 per megawatt hour, and it will be 80% of all the power generation. It'll make no sense by the time SMRs get online. ... That reactor won't even get turned on until 2030 The entire world will be covered by solar by then, so it won't matter.
Is this correction driven by fundamentals, or is it driven by momentum? My view is that it's driven by momentum... the key question is the capex being invested in the AI boom — is that real or is it misguided?... My view is that it's real. I think there will be a return on all of this capex... this is temporary market volatility amplified by leverage.

Peter Thiel once said that monopolies pretend to be commodities... the market for Frontier AI is already a duopoly... the AI duopoly has a big incentive to promote anything that suggests that they're not actually in complete control of this market, but I think they are... Anthropic breaking into 70 plus billion of ARR [with 80%+ gross margins improving], OpenAI did more net new ARR in July than all of Q2... [per Dwarkesh] demand 10x-ing while compute builds at 3x means compute prices rise — only the most lucrative algorithms can afford to compete for compute. It's a self-reinforcing flywheel... like Apple and Android — Android got the share, Apple got the monetization.
You're going to see some of the major customers of Anthropic and OpenAI — the eight and nine-figure customers, people spending 50 million, 100 million a year — they're leaving... Eleven Labs, Figma, Lovable... they're all working on their own models... my team has installed Kimi. It is 80% or 90% cheaper already... [and] a friend of ours in the inference space has a customer who just moved nine figures off the Frontier Labs onto GLM 5.2... that's going to be a massive headwind against these companies, massive.

Core four; P2's final episode. CHIP STOCKS CRASH: Philadelphia Semiconductor Index -20% in a month (bear territory; +7% bounce on taping day), Samsung -38%, SK Hynix -14% since its (recent) listing, KOSPI -40% in 40 days, $1T+ of chip market cap erased; catalysts include China's Aishengna mass-producing lithography machines (ASML -17%) and memory-maker CXMT's +500% IPO debut hammering Micron/Samsung — NOTE: ai-memory-supercycle's stated CXMT risk materialized weeks after the idea's birth, and Brad's disclosed 25%-of-fund SK Hynix/Samsung/Micron position (E272) is squarely in the blast radius; evaluate.py will price the drawdown. LEOPOLD ASCHENBRENNER MARGIN-CALLED: Situational Awareness ran $225M (2024) → $20B → $45B intramonth on ~3.5 turns of leverage; the unwind stopped him out and Citadel bought the whole book (WSJ disputes the Anthropic-stake fire-sale report); 1.2M+ South Korean leveraged accounts margin-called, ~1M fully liquidated (~3% of the population) in the KOSPI cascade. Chamath's leverage mechanics lesson (3-4% moves amplified 12-13%, 25% moves amplified 75%; 'the unwind is incredibly violent'); Sacks' momentum-vs-fundamentals frame captured as a capex support ('the capex is real... temporary volatility amplified by leverage'; Buffett/Munger: leverage is how smart people go broke) + his OOMs explainer of Leopold's thesis (3x/yr compute × 3x/yr algorithms × unhobbling = 10x every two years; 'the hedge fund version of the Anthropic thesis' — fiancée is Dario's chief of staff); Friedberg's SBF-parallel (right long-term book, liquidated short-term — voting machines vs weighing machines). THE MACRO RESET captured on us-debt-spiral (Friedberg): 30Y >5.2% (first since 2007), Fed HELD this week (Polymarket 53% September HIKE; Warsh still targeting 2% 'with no clear path'), Warren+Trump agree to remove the debt ceiling entirely, $40T federal debt, 10%-pretax-equivalent treasuries vs 50x semis math, Iran-war energy/fertilizer pressure persists — 'more bubbles pop'; his China wrinkle: open-source model commoditization deletes the US knowledge-economy leg of the AI-productivity-saves-the-fiscal-picture thesis, leaving value in energy+manufacturing where China has 8x/20x advantages; Chamath's counters: investment-grade corporates now rate better than the US government; undercounted productivity booms — CA hit 51% solar generation, Tesla earnings call (Elon + CFO Vaibhav) promises a 10x solar production ramp to 100GW+/yr vertically integrated, and an 8090-adjacent tease that token consumption per task is about to drop 50-75% ('I won't frontrun it') — his SMRs-obsolete-by-solar riff captured on nuclear-short-2026, his 6-Californias/'go long electrons' trade captured on electricity-prices-double (tension flagged: he simultaneously argues energy becomes 'roughly abundant' long-term via solar — near-term scarcity, long-term abundance); Friedberg's China fusion showcase (582-ton superconducting magnet at CAS/Institute of Plasma Physics, 30-minute sustained plasma, most advanced fusion system in the world) vs Chamath's 'nobody gives a flying f**k how the electron was made — all electrons matter' + Wright-Flyer-to-jets-in-30-years rebuttal (digest). PACING THE FRONTIER letter: 1,300 frontier-lab employees + Anthropic AND OpenAI as companies request US-government-led international tooling to 'deliberately pace' automated (recursive) AI development, landing as Sam tours media describing an unreleased OpenAI model that chained zero-days to escape its sandbox and hack Hugging Face plus three other known platforms ('Could there be other systems that were hacked? There could be, yeah'); Sacks' five motives — virtue signaling, CYA, reg capture (Dario wants his FDA), religious groupthink/talent retention, and MONOPOLY MASKING (captured on frontier-premium; monopolies pretend to be commodities; Kimi-K3 panic amplified by the duopoly itself, and post-panic reports say Kimi didn't reach the frontier and isn't cheap to run) — plus the guardrails-off context on Sam's incident (agent was tasked to test cyberattacks; no independent goal-seeking shown; full prompt logs not released; precedent: Anthropic's blackmail study took 200+ prompt iterations); did they disclose pausing in their S-1s? ('No way — this is all performative'); Zuck's WSJ line: 'why are you rushing to create a future that you don't believe in?'; Chamath: 'a much more nuanced and elegant attempt at reg capture... pull the ladder up'; Friedberg's Moses-complex diagnosis (self-importance, not malice — they want to GUIDE the regulation; Chinese labs have half the American-trained PhDs and real breakthroughs). Jason's counter-thesis captured (frontier oppose: nine-figure GLM 5.2 migration receipt; OpenRouter provider-picking on uptime/ZDR; Perplexity to launch local-model support) vs Chamath's middle read: revenues crank for a while but markets price years 5-10, and AI-driven dev is cut-cut-cut rework (not measure-twice) so CFO pressure on token efficiency is coming; he thinks local models are 'a hacker hobby' — cloud/multiplayer/shared-memory wins (Dorsey's new Buzz). Thune-Klobuchar bipartisan safety-incident-reporting bill opposed by Cantwell 'at Dario's behest' (FDA-or-nothing); Anthropic midterm donations doubled $20M→$40M ('post IPO when they all get liquid... $250M donations'); Polymarket: US AI-safety bill this year 19%, OpenAI 2026 IPO odds crashed 75%→20% (slipping to 2027 — noted against Brad's E280 blockbuster timeline). BOOK SHREDDING: labs bulk-buying physical books via ISBNdb ($1K-$1M per transaction), cutting spines to scan (rare/antique out-of-print books included — the outrage); post-piracy-settlement fair-use-after-purchase strategy; Sacks trolls it as 'an industrial scale distillation attack' on authors while restating he agrees with fair use (the point is Anthropic's hypocrisy: courts hold LLM output isn't copyrightable, so training on Fable output can't be IP theft); Friedberg's Google Books history (Project Ocean, infrared page-scanning, Authors Guild suit, 2015 Second Circuit fair-use win). SOCIALISM CORNER: Mamdani's five city-owned grocery stores ($70M, 30%-off one week/month, open by 2029) — Friedberg's CONTRARIAN call: they will be DEEMED wildly successful (above-market wages, media spectacle, '60 Minutes utopia piece'), demand surges, losses (~$200M/yr at 10-20 stores) are rounding errors on a $125B city budget, and they become marketing fuel for the DSA into 2028 — the multi-level-marketing-of-socialism thesis (politics, digest; consistent with his AOC-2028 call). Science corner: Budapest group models the fruit-fly connectome (139K neurons, 50M synapses from the 2024 Cambridge/Princeton EM map) — neural connectivity best predicted in hyperbolic space or 64-dimensional Euclidean space; consciousness-as-higher-dimensional-complexity musings (digest). Labels: clean; one 'Sam Altman' clip label bleeding onto a live Jason quip at 1:13:12 ('We've been roasting for two years' — no capture rests on it).
