I think we're going to see OpenAI go down to about a third of the market... I think we're at peak OpenAI right now... They're going to make Gemini free for life for the best models... [OpenAI's] 80% of the revenue comes from $20 subscriptions. That's going to get decimated to zero.
Just look at the last three weeks of Google's stock performance, it basically doubled once we thought that Gemini was incredible. And so if you want to make Gemini even more incredible, just pour another billion users into it. And if that costs you 50 billion, it's okay, because you'll make a trillion-a-market cap. It's like a no-brainer.
Google's willingness to take risk has really highlighted the difference in posture in the last year. ChatGPT... has taken this defensive posture that I think has fundamentally damaged the product and the brand... In a way, no greater blessing has ever happened to Alphabet than OpenAI's rise.
Episode digest
written during extraction and stored in data/extractions/ep253.json — the auditable source of truth, including everything market-adjacent that did not earn a capture
Sam Altman's internal 'code red' (refocus on core ChatGPT as Gemini 3 takes share) dominates: OpenAI's gen-AI traffic share has slid from 90%+ to ~68% and all four pile onto the Google side — Jason calls 'peak OpenAI' (down to a third of the market, subscriptions decimated by free Gemini), Chamath frames hyperscaler cash as a product-subsidy weapon ('a no-brainer... trillion of market cap'), Friedberg credits Google's restored risk appetite and calls OpenAI's rise 'no greater blessing for Alphabet'. Sacks (czar) sketches the Goldilocks five-lab competitive field and admits he was in the Google-eulogy camp six months ago — no new directional claim, not captured. OpenAI itself remains private (no instrument), so the bearish side lives in the digest: Jason predicts NVIDIA walks back or 70-80% downsizes its OpenAI option. The NYT-vs-Sacks hit-piece saga (fabricated dinner, divestments at 50% discounts) is media/politics. Poverty-line segment: Chamath debunks the viral $140K claim (MIT living-wage ~$93K in median cities) but flags the $45-63K benefits-cliff stagnation zone; Friedberg re-runs his socialism-spiral thesis and predicts a 'referenceable socialist' 2028 Democratic nominee plus wealth-tax capital flight (Norway's failed levy, WA payroll-tax proposal) — political forecasts, no clean instrument, digest-only. Labels: clean, full roster present.
