🤖 Google defends search by doubling TAC — margin traded for share

Chamath's countermeasure for Sundar: take traffic acquisition cost from ~21% of revenue to 30-40%, paying publishers roughly double so they contractually exclude rival AI crawlers, funded out of free cash flow (from ~$100B down to $70-80B) plus the $100B+ cash pile. Google keeps its 93% share and its exclusivity but permanently degrades the best business model ever built. Bearish GOOGL margin and free cash flow; bullish the distribution partners and content owners on the receiving end of TAC, of which Apple is the largest at $15-25B a year with the deal up for renegotiation. Friedberg takes the other side: most of Google's TAC is AdSense revshare, not search defaults, so doubling it moves the needle a bit but does not change the equation.

⚖ Why this result

fully deterministic — computed from daily closes on the scoring date; nothing below is editable or hand-set

  1. Window: 2023-02-11 → 2024-02-11 — first mention + 12-month horizon, then the window locks.
  2. The call: ▼ SHORT GOOGL (primary play). GOOGL rose 57.5% over the window → return (sign flipped for a SHORT) = -57.5% (the call lost money).
  3. Benchmark: holding SPY over the same window returned +23.2% → vs SPY = -57.5 − (+23.2) = -80.7% — what this call made or lost against just owning the index. This is the number the result uses.
Direction-only read: -34.2% — did GOOGL move the predicted way relative to the market. The two only differ on a SHORT: this call was right about direction relative to the index but still cost money versus holding it.
  4. Rule fired:
    · RIGHT — return ≥ +10% AND beat SPY by 5+
    · HALF — return ≥ +5% OR beat SPY at all
    ▶ WRONG — everything else
  5. Credit: supporters of a WRONG earn 0 each, opposers the opposite — this feeds the scoreboard. supported: Chamath | opposed: Friedberg | proxy-sensitive: AAPL (long)→PARTIAL (+23.4%)
