📈 Trump's SPAC is a grift that does not hold its valuation

Digital World Acquisition Corp went from $10 to a $157 print in two sessions on the Trump Media (TMTG) announcement, putting a $10-20B cap on a shell with, in Jason's words, no business, no team, no IP, no users and a Truth Social codebase copy-pasted from Mastodon without honouring the GPL. Jason's call: it is the ultimate peak-bubble grift, a GameStop-style manipulated tape, no product ever ships and if one does it caps out at 5-10M users. The other three take the other side — the market cap IS the asset: TMTG can print a secondary, raise billions because the demand is there, and M&A its way (Rumble, Locals, the Facebook right-wing publisher roster) to a real Fox/Twitter competitor, and Chamath predicts the closing de-SPAC enterprise value shocks everyone.

⚖ Why this verdict

fully deterministic — evaluate.py replays this from daily closes; nothing below is editable or hand-set

  1. Window: 2021-10-23 → 2022-10-23 — first mention + 12-month horizon, then the window locks.
  2. The call: ▼ SHORT DJT (primary play). DJT fell 80.0% over the window → direction-adjusted R = +80.0% (the call made money).
  3. Benchmark: holding SPY over the same window returned -16.6%α = +80.0 − (-16.6) = +96.6% — what this call made or lost against just owning the index. This is the number the verdict uses.
Stock-selection read: +63.4% — did DJT move the predicted way relative to the market. The two only differ on a SHORT: this call beat the index outright.
  4. Rule fired:
    ▶ HIT — R ≥ +10% AND α ≥ +5 ✓ (R 80.0, α 96.6)
    · PARTIAL — R ≥ +5% OR α ≥ 0
    · MISS — everything else
  5. Credit: supporters of a HIT earn 1.0 each, opposers the inverse — this feeds the scoreboard weights. supported: Jason | opposed: Chamath, Friedberg, Sacks

▼ SHORT DJTstock PRIMARY Digital World Acquisition Corp, the SPAC taking Trump Media public and the instrument the entire segment is about. DWAC was the live ticker in October 2021 but returns ZERO yfinance rows today; the continuous series (incl. Oct 2021: $9.96 on 10/20 -> $94.20 on 10/22) is served under the post-merger symbol DJT, so ingest's RENAMED_TICKERS map normalises DWAC -> DJT
▼ SHORT IPOetf adjacent Renaissance IPO ETF — the listed new-issue/de-SPAC froth cohort that DWAC is the most extreme expression of; Jason explicitly generalises from DWAC to 'the peak bubble of our lifetime'

“the presidential grift is always the best. Just as a case in point, Trump's SPAC is worth over $2 billion and BuzzFeed, which makes $360 million a year, and I think has $100, $200 million cash.”

“The value of the Trump entity is going to be closer to $20 billion. ... the SEC, apparently the DOJ sent a bunch of inquiries on this, asking for background on the transaction, because there's no business, there's no contracts, there's no employees. It's just a whole idea.”

“Still doing well. But look, they had, you know, obviously a reaction, a market driven reaction to the fact that he was taken off Twitter. ... certainly proving to be technically difficult. But as we all know, it's not technically impossible. He just got probably the wrong people working on it.”
