🌍 Markets are bottoming now - the Fed breaks something and the Fed put returns

Chamath's dated fall-2022 call, explicitly framed as the sequel to his fall-2021 'markets are going to poop the bed': equities are 3-5% from the lows and it is time to start nibbling. The mechanism is cycle position plus a policy backstop - every hiking cycle since 1983 except 1983 itself bottomed in the first third, we are in month seven of a ~21-24 month process, the Fed gets to 4.5% fast, something breaks the way UK gilts just did, and the Fed put comes back on the table at which point markets go bonkers. Sacks and Friedberg take the other side on fat-tail geopolitical risk and frozen capital flows.

⚖ Why this verdict

fully deterministic — evaluate.py replays this from daily closes; nothing below is editable or hand-set

  1. Window: 2022-10-01 → 2023-10-01 — first mention + 12-month horizon, then the window locks.
  2. The call: ▲ LONG SPY (primary play). SPY rose 18.4% over the window → direction-adjusted R = +18.4% (the call made money).
  3. Benchmark: holding SPY over the same window returned +18.4%α = +18.4 − (+18.4) = +0.0% — what this call made or lost against just owning the index. This is the number the verdict uses. (SPY is itself the primary here — scored on R alone.)
  4. Rule fired:
    ▶ HIT — R ≥ +10% AND α ≥ +5 ✓ (R 18.4, α 0.0)
    · PARTIAL — R ≥ +5% OR α ≥ 0
    · MISS — everything else
  5. Credit: supporters of a HIT earn 1.0 each, opposers the inverse — this feeds the scoreboard weights. supported: Brad Gerstner, Chamath, Jason, Sacks | opposed: Friedberg | benchmark-primary: scored on R alone | proxy-sensitive: TLT→MISS (-12.1%)

“either in a world of inflation run amok because the Fed isn't hiking fast enough, which just destroys future cash flows, or in a world where the Fed pivots in a moment like this, and Nick, you can show the second chart, both result in the same outcome, which is that you just see these massive drawdowns in the value of risk assets.”
