🏛️ Microsoft's bundle playbook gets an antitrust remedy
The EU's Teams/Office charge revives the old consent-decree theory that bundling a free clone into a must-have monopoly product illegally kills standalone competitors. Sacks and Chamath argue the remedy that should and will spread to US regulators is forced a la carte pricing on every component of the bundle, which strips Microsoft of the free-on-the-margin lever it has run for 40 years and levels the field for standalone enterprise software. Friedberg takes the direct other side: cheaper bundles benefit the customer, and Figma, Zoom and Google Meet show better standalone products still win.

⚖ Why this verdict
fully deterministic — evaluate.py replays this from daily closes; nothing below is editable or hand-set
- Window: 2024-06-29 → 2025-06-29 — first mention + 12-month horizon, then the window locks.
- The call: ▼ SHORT MSFT (primary play). MSFT rose 9.4% over the window → direction-adjusted R = -9.4% (the call lost money).
- Benchmark: holding SPY over the same window returned +14.2%
→ α = -9.4 − (+14.2) = -23.6%
— what this call made or lost against just owning the index. This is the number the verdict uses.
Stock-selection read: +4.7% — did MSFT move the predicted way relative to the market. The two only differ on a SHORT: this call was right about direction relative to the index but still cost money versus holding it.
- Rule fired:
· HIT — R ≥ +10% AND α ≥ +5· PARTIAL — R ≥ +5% OR α ≥ 0▶ MISS — everything else
- Credit: supporters of a MISS earn 0 each, opposers the inverse — this feeds the scoreboard weights. supported: Chamath, Jason, Sacks | opposed: Friedberg

| expression | symbol | kind | relevance | rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ▼ SHORT | MSFT | stock | PRIMARY | bundle pricing power is the lever directly under regulatory attack |
| ▼ SHORT | CRM | stock | adjacent | Salesforce filed the EU complaint; Slack is the named direct beneficiary of forced unbundling |
| ▼ SHORT | ZM | stock | adjacent | standalone communications vendor cited on both sides of the debate as the test case for unbundled competition |
Mention log
“I don't buy the antitrust arguments on a lot of these cases. I don't think that you're keeping competitive solutions in the market if the benefit of the lower cost product is actually there for the consumer, the customer.”
