📈 SVB failure triggers deposit flight out of the regional banks

SVB's seizure destroys confidence in uninsured business deposits, so depositors rationally pull cash out of every regional bank and park it at JP Morgan or another of the top four. Because held-to-maturity bonds are carried at book value (the WSJ puts system-wide unrealized treasury losses at $620B), nobody can assess a regional bank's solvency, so the run is self-fulfilling. Sacks' call: without a federal backstop the regional banking system gets decimated and the US is left with four too-big-to-fail banks. Chamath reads the contagion straight off the regional-bank ETF's equity tier falling off a cliff and asks 'what's to prevent bank number 35?'

⚖ Why this verdict

fully deterministic — evaluate.py replays this from daily closes; nothing below is editable or hand-set

  1. Window: 2023-03-11 → 2024-03-11 — first mention + 12-month horizon, then the window locks.
  2. The call: ▼ SHORT KRE (primary play). KRE rose 14.8% over the window → direction-adjusted R = -14.8% (the call lost money).
  3. Benchmark: holding SPY over the same window returned +34.7%α = -14.8 − (+34.7) = -49.5% — what this call made or lost against just owning the index. This is the number the verdict uses.
Stock-selection read: +19.8% — did KRE move the predicted way relative to the market. The two only differ on a SHORT: this call was right about direction relative to the index but still cost money versus holding it.
  4. Rule fired:
    · HIT — R ≥ +10% AND α ≥ +5
    · PARTIAL — R ≥ +5% OR α ≥ 0
    ▶ MISS — everything else
  5. Credit: supporters of a MISS earn 0 each, opposers the inverse — this feeds the scoreboard weights. supported: Chamath, Friedberg, Jason, Sacks

▼ SHORT KREetf PRIMARY iShares regional banking ETF — literally the instrument Chamath pulled up on screen as his contagion proxy ('This is the iShares Regional Banks ETF'). Used as a PROXY because the faithful single names have no usable series: SIVB was halted and delisted, SBNY was seized two days after this taping, and FRC failed in May 2023.
▼ SHORT JPMstock adjacent named repeatedly as the DESTINATION of the deposit flight ('why the hell would you keep your money anywhere but JP Morgan or a top four bank') — this is the other side of the trade and should not be read as confirming the bearish direction
▼ SHORT KBEetf adjacent SPDR bank ETF — broader second read on the same deposit-flight thesis, also a proxy
▼ SHORT XLFetf adjacent broad financials — the systemic version of the claim

“So I think there's a chance that if the federal government doesn't step in here, the whole regional banking system could be decimated, and you're just going to be left with four too big to fail banks.”

“Folks, when you look at the equity tier of these regional banks, people are liquidating the equity tier because they know that that is the first domino to fall if banks go into receivership. Please act accordingly. You can see it in the ETFs. You can see it in the trade flows. This is not a Silicon Valley problem anymore.”

“However, it has also now, I think, created a situation where people are less confident about them. And so the money flows are going from the regional banks to the systemically important banks, the SIBs.”

“One was these long dated bonds having unrealized losses, which is causing problems in regional community banks. The second piece of it is the commercial real estate crisis, which I think is metastasizing right now, which is also going to be a banking crisis once all those unrealized losses come due.”
