🌍 Payroll revisions expose an economy materially weaker than the headline data

The BLS revision that erased 818,000 jobs from the 12 months to March 2024 (roughly 1.2 million across all restatements) confirms that official payroll data has been systematically overstated and that revisions only ever go one direction. The real economy is a lot slower than the prints implied, narrowly staying out of recession and propped up by roughly $2 trillion of annual deficit spending, so US growth-sensitive risk assets are carrying too little risk premium and the data itself is too unreliable to price off.

⚖ Why this verdict

fully deterministic — evaluate.py replays this from daily closes; nothing below is editable or hand-set

  1. Window: 2024-08-23 → 2025-08-23 — first mention + 12-month horizon, then the window locks.
  2. The call: ▼ SHORT SPY (primary play). SPY rose 16.2% over the window → direction-adjusted R = -16.2% (the call lost money).
  3. Benchmark: holding SPY over the same window returned +16.2%α = -16.2 − (+16.2) = -32.5% — what this call made or lost against just owning the index. This is the number the verdict uses.
Stock-selection read: +0.0% — did SPY move the predicted way relative to the market. The two only differ on a SHORT: this call was right about direction relative to the index but still cost money versus holding it.
(SPY is itself the primary here — scored on R alone.)
  4. Rule fired:
    · HIT — R ≥ +10% AND α ≥ +5
    · PARTIAL — R ≥ +5% OR α ≥ 0
    ▶ MISS — everything else
  5. Credit: supporters of a MISS earn 0 each, opposers the inverse — this feeds the scoreboard weights. supported: Joe Lonsdale | opposed: Chamath, Friedberg, Jason, Sacks | benchmark-primary: scored on R alone

“I predicted this would happen, and I didn't know exactly how we would get the correction, but now it's come out. By the way, it's not just this 818,000 jobs. If you look at the last 12 months and out of all the restatements, it's been something like 1.2 million.”
