🏛️ Speculative-competition antitrust blocks chill tech M&A

The UK CMA is killing Adobe/Figma on a novel theory — not that the two compete today, but that Figma might compete with Photoshop some day — after 15 months of process. Sacks and Chamath argue that once a regulator can veto any deal on an unquantifiable future-competition test, and take a year and a half to say so, M&A activity gets a real chilling effect, the only reliable exit for startups narrows, and companies will deliberately avoid creating a nexus in the offending jurisdiction.

⚖ Why this verdict

fully deterministic — evaluate.py replays this from daily closes; nothing below is editable or hand-set

  1. Window: 2023-12-08 → 2024-12-08 — first mention + 12-month horizon, then the window locks.
  2. The call: ▼ SHORT GS (primary play). GS rose 75.1% over the window → direction-adjusted R = -75.1% (the call lost money).
  3. Benchmark: holding SPY over the same window returned +33.9%α = -75.1 − (+33.9) = -108.9% — what this call made or lost against just owning the index. This is the number the verdict uses.
Stock-selection read: -41.2% — did GS move the predicted way relative to the market. The two only differ on a SHORT: this call was right about direction relative to the index but still cost money versus holding it.
  4. Rule fired:
    · HIT — R ≥ +10% AND α ≥ +5
    · PARTIAL — R ≥ +5% OR α ≥ 0
    ▶ MISS — everything else
  5. Credit: supporters of a MISS earn 0 each, opposers the inverse — this feeds the scoreboard weights. supported: Friedberg, Jason, Sacks | opposed: Chamath
