📈 Cellular meat is uneconomic this cycle - alternative protein is a value trap

Friedberg's cost-curve verdict on the WSJ lab-grown-meat post-mortem, from inside the sector. Leg one: plant-protein substitutes (Beyond, Impossible) lose because they cost more, taste worse and use saturated fat for mouthfeel that the American Heart Association has flagged - the category never wins unless it is both cheaper AND better. Leg two: cultivated/cellular meat is many orders of magnitude away from cost parity, gated by strain engineering, ~60 tunable process variables and a hard capacity ceiling (of ~100m litres of biomanufacturing capacity worldwide only ~1m is rentable, against ~200 synbio startups, so capacity cost is up ~4x); a Merck executive's read is that fetal-bovine-serum demand sells a billion dollars and then zero because nobody can make money at $500 a burger. Near-term the money is in the high-value recombinant proteins already falling (insulin, pepsin, rennet), not in meat, so the listed alt-protein cohort de-rates further before the technology arrives.

⚖ Why this verdict

fully deterministic — evaluate.py replays this from daily closes; nothing below is editable or hand-set

  1. Window: 2023-04-28 → 2024-04-28 — first mention + 12-month horizon, then the window locks.
  2. The call: ▼ SHORT BYND (primary play). BYND fell 52.7% over the window → direction-adjusted R = +52.7% (the call made money).
  3. Benchmark: holding SPY over the same window returned +24.0%α = +52.7 − (+24.0) = +28.8% — what this call made or lost against just owning the index. This is the number the verdict uses.
Stock-selection read: +76.7% — did BYND move the predicted way relative to the market. The two only differ on a SHORT: this call was right about direction relative to the index but still cost money versus holding it.
  4. Rule fired:
    ▶ HIT — R ≥ +10% AND α ≥ +5 ✓ (R 52.7, α 28.8)
    · PARTIAL — R ≥ +5% OR α ≥ 0
    · MISS — everything else
  5. Credit: supporters of a HIT earn 1.0 each, opposers the inverse — this feeds the scoreboard weights. supported: Chamath, Friedberg, Jason

▼ SHORT BYNDstock PRIMARY the only listed pure-play alternative-protein name and the exact company Friedberg names; his verdict is the plant-protein category never wins on price, taste or health
▼ SHORT DNAstock adjacent Ginkgo Bioworks is the listed strain-engineering / biomanufacturing platform whose synbio food programs sit on precisely the cost curve Friedberg says is many orders of magnitude from parity - bearish on the end-market it was funded against

“So I want to just get back to the unit economics. The cost per kilogram or the cost per gram of the protein, we are still many orders of magnitude away on cellular meat. So the problems you're laying out are really down-the-road problems of optimization. Right now, we've got more fundamental problems on how do you actually get this stuff to be cost competitive.”

“It still makes no sense, because the only reason they would do it is if they were afraid that the lab-grown meat was just so much cheaper and frankly so much tastier than what they make. And Friedberg, you've said this many times. We are so orders of magnitude away from it being...”
