📈 Venture has to shrink to clear public-market alpha - fund sizes and GP count come down

CRV handing back $275m and Founders Fund halving its eighth fund are the start of a forced re-rationalization of venture: private tech cannot mint the trillion-plus of annual enterprise value needed to beat a NASDAQ that creates ~$800B a year once you charge for illiquidity and duration, so total capital, fund sizes and the number of GPs all have to come down and LPs concentrate into fewer managers. Bearish the listed alt-manager fee complex and the late-stage private cohort that depends on abundant follow-on capital.

⚖ Why this verdict

fully deterministic — evaluate.py replays this from daily closes; nothing below is editable or hand-set

  1. Window: 2024-10-11 → 2025-10-11 — first mention + 12-month horizon, then the window locks.
  2. The call: ▼ SHORT BX (primary play). BX rose 3.2% over the window → direction-adjusted R = -3.2% (the call lost money).
  3. Benchmark: holding SPY over the same window returned +14.0%α = -3.2 − (+14.0) = -17.2% — what this call made or lost against just owning the index. This is the number the verdict uses.
Stock-selection read: +10.8% — did BX move the predicted way relative to the market. The two only differ on a SHORT: this call was right about direction relative to the index but still cost money versus holding it.
  4. Rule fired:
    · HIT — R ≥ +10% AND α ≥ +5
    · PARTIAL — R ≥ +5% OR α ≥ 0
    ▶ MISS — everything else
  5. Credit: supporters of a MISS earn 0 each, opposers the inverse — this feeds the scoreboard weights. supported: Chamath, Friedberg, Sacks | proxy-sensitive: KKR→PARTIAL (+12.6%)

“That just seems like it's really hard to do. Where is all of that value getting created? So I think that venture needs to go through a phase where it re-rationalizes.”

“In a market where there is excess venture capital, where valuations are at a premium and where you don't see the exit path, the M&A or the IPO events that makes sense, that you can actually realize that model, you should take less capital and make fewer surer investments.”

“As you guys know, we looked at the data, even the best venture capital firms in Silicon Valley, with the smartest, most sophisticated people investing in private assets, were not able to beat the NASDAQ over the last few years.”
