🏛️ Gulf capital realigns to a US bloc, displacing China's Belt and Road

Chamath's read of Trump's Middle East trip: China spent 15 years buying Gulf influence through Belt and Road (roughly $200B into Saudi and Qatar), and in one week the US announced about $2 trillion of inbound investment commitments from Saudi, UAE and Qatar plus several hundred billion of reciprocal US corporate investment into the region — a commercial alliance that flips the Gulf out of China's orbit into a US-aligned bloc and is hard for any other country to undo. The tradeable expression is the US export and AI-infrastructure complex those deals fund: the ~$96B/160-plane Boeing order, a ~$142B Saudi defense partnership, and US-licensed AI inference and data-centre buildouts in Saudi and UAE (Groq's ~$1.7B Saudi deal, which Chamath says holds the only US inference export licence).

⚖ Why this verdict

fully deterministic — evaluate.py replays this from daily closes; nothing below is editable or hand-set

  1. Window: 2025-05-17 → 2026-05-17 — first mention + 12-month horizon, then the window locks.
  2. The call: ▲ LONG NVDA (primary play). NVDA rose 66.2% over the window → direction-adjusted R = +66.2% (the call made money).
  3. Benchmark: holding SPY over the same window returned +25.7%α = +66.2 − (+25.7) = +40.6% — what this call made or lost against just owning the index. This is the number the verdict uses.
  4. Rule fired:
    ▶ HIT — R ≥ +10% AND α ≥ +5 ✓ (R 66.2, α 40.6)
    · PARTIAL — R ≥ +5% OR α ≥ 0
    · MISS — everything else
  5. Credit: supporters of a HIT earn 1.0 each, opposers the inverse — this feeds the scoreboard weights. supported: Ben Shapiro, Chamath, Jason, Sacks | proxy-sensitive: BA→PARTIAL (+7.4%); ITA→PARTIAL (+26.0%)

▲ LONG NVDAstock PRIMARY the channel the besties actually argue — US-licensed accelerators for the Saudi/UAE inference and data-centre buildout, gated by the export licences and 80%-American-operator terms that decide whether Gulf compute is American or Chinese
▲ LONG BAstock adjacent the headline aircraft leg — 160 planes / ~$96B from Qatar plus Saudi orders; a backlog booking nobody on the pod argues, so context rather than the verdict
▲ LONG ITAetf adjacent the ~$142B Saudi defense partnership flows to the US aerospace and defense complex

“In one week, the sitting president of the United States announced $2 trillion of investment from those countries into the United States. What does that effectively do? I think what that effectively does is say that the Middle East is turning a page, that they are beyond these regional conflicts, that they want to thrive as a society, and that they are 100% aligned with the United States.”
