🤖 Consumption-based software pricing destroys the business — Snowflake is the case study
Chamath's narrower call inside the SaaS-pain thesis: as incumbents flee the per-seat model for consumption pricing, they adopt a model that wins short-term adoption and then kills the business. Customers will not tolerate a cost line that scales with data they cannot value in advance, so alternatives grow around the incumbent - Postgres, Supabase - and the workload leaves. Snowflake is his named example.
⚖ Why this verdict
fully deterministic — evaluate.py replays this from daily closes; nothing below is editable or hand-set
- Window: 2025-06-21 → 2026-06-21 — first mention + 12-month horizon, then the window locks.
- The call: ▼ SHORT SNOW (primary play). SNOW rose 8.7% over the window → direction-adjusted R = -8.7% (the call lost money).
- Benchmark: holding SPY over the same window returned +25.8%
→ α = -8.7 − (+25.8) = -34.5%
— what this call made or lost against just owning the index. This is the number the verdict uses.
Stock-selection read: +17.1% — did SNOW move the predicted way relative to the market. The two only differ on a SHORT: this call was right about direction relative to the index but still cost money versus holding it.
- Rule fired:
· HIT — R ≥ +10% AND α ≥ +5· PARTIAL — R ≥ +5% OR α ≥ 0▶ MISS — everything else
- Credit: supporters of a MISS earn 0 each, opposers the inverse — this feeds the scoreboard weights. supported: Chamath

Mention log
“I just wanted to comment on this consumption-based pricing. It doesn't work. And what I mean is you can have some adoption in the short term. The best example is Snowflake. But in the long term, it destroys your business.”
