NEW SPY 🌍 Rapid reopening: weeks, not months closed 49 CONTESTED ▲ +61.6 0.0 → 61.6

Asymptomatic-spread data means the fatality denominator is wrong and the true rate is far lower than feared; mass antibody testing plus green zones reopens the West Coast within weeks (Friedberg: April 7-8; Chamath: six weeks) — the risk-asset recovery trade.

These IGG and IGM tests will come online at scale in the next two weeks... we will establish demarked zones within cities and towns, green zones... I am telling you that it's within six weeks from now.
Friedberg
Friedberg support ×2 explicit_prediction 1mo horizon ▶ 1:26:29
I'm taking the under. I'm taking April 7th or 8th... the West Coast, with some travel restrictions, is going to be able to reopen for business probably around April 7th or 8th because we're going to see a dramatic decline at that point. And we're going to see a lower fatality rate than everyone is predicting.

I, too, am taking the under, but barely. I think we're four or five weeks.
NEW SPY 🌍 COVID crash goes deeper — no V-shaped recovery closed 0 CONTESTED ▲ +51.5 0.0 → 51.5

The March 2020 crash extends toward a ~50% total correction and cannot come roaring back: repo-market seizures, LP portfolio rebalancing forcing venture markdowns, and levered funds being margin-called mean the capital-markets damage persists even if the virus is contained.

The stock market has gone down another 20% since then... We are looking like this is going to be a 50% correction or something like that. We're now well past a 30 plus percent.
Chamath
Chamath support ×2 explicit_prediction ▶ 41:24
It cannot come roaring back... when the repo market ceases and there's no way for you to either buy or sell commercial paper... the markets start to really seize and capitulate, and everybody is just losing enormous amounts of money... these LPs are going to have to portfolio rebalance, and they're going to have to force venture capitalists to mark down their books.
NEW EZU 🌍 Eurozone collapses, Japan finished, dollar is the only safety closed 8 CONTESTED ▲ +44.7 0.0 → 44.7

Post-COVID there are only two economies that matter — the US and China — and only one safety instrument, the US dollar; the eurozone collapses and Japan is finished, giving the US exceptional leverage to run $5-10T deficits as the global backstop.

The eurozone is going to collapse. Japan is finished. So there are two economies that matter. There's China and the United States as of today... in a set of two, there's only one instrument of safety, which is the United States dollar... the United States has exceptional leverage... It could run $5 trillion deficits tomorrow. It could run $10 trillion deficits because it is still the backstop.

Episode digest

written during extraction and stored in data/extractions/ep001.json — the auditable source of truth, including everything market-adjacent that did not earn a capture

Episode 1, taped 2020-03-19 — four days before the actual market bottom. Trio only (no Sacks). The asymptomatic-denominator thesis (Friedberg: true fatality 0.15-1.8%, mass antibody testing is the unlock) drives both the rapid-reopening calls captured above and Chamath's green-zones plan. Chamath holds both sides honestly: reopening in six weeks BUT markets 'cannot come roaring back' (repo seizure, LP rebalancing → forced venture markdowns, 36-months-runway advice). Uncaptured advocacy: wipe out airline equity in bailouts (96% of FCF went to buybacks), nationalize-then-refloat with proceeds to Treasury, deglobalization/resiliency-over-efficiency (Apple onshoring at +$100/iPhone) — should-statements, no capture. Friedberg mid-show tax-loss-harvesting tip and live market-trade interruptions; wet-market/China culture debate — digest. Labels clean (David Friedberg/Chamath Palihapitiya/Jason Calacanis).
